What would you say to Billy if he was your little terror?

  1. If I were someone other than his parent... I would take the time to have a conversation with Billy's parents. They should know how he is behaving. There is only so much that a non-parent can do. If the question is what should Billy's parents do about this situation once they hear of it? The first step is a conversation, while letting Billy know that his teacher/scout master, will be reporting back on future behavior. If it doesn't improve, whatever Billy likes best will be Off Limits for a designated period of time. Actions have consequences.

    1. Robin, this is what many parents in Jamaica who discipline through corporal punishment don't understand. My mom used to beat me for everything and I decided not to raise my son that way. Separating him from the things he enjoys works very well. No problems on this front. :)

  2. Some honest talk and if that doesn't work a time out, if I were a teacher, caregiver or a parent. But the word terror has a whole different set of ramifications now for most of us.

    1. True that, Nilanjana. I knew I wouldn't use terror in the normal sense. :) Some time out is definitely in order for Billy.

  4. LOL. I'd march that young man up to his room and make him copy from the dictionary, starting with the word respect.

    1. And coming from my comment to Alex. They learn tact as they grow older and realize they can't always say exactly what they please.

  5. In my grade 8 classroom, I have a system.
I use an exercise book. Each child has a page. If a learner is disruptive, then I stop the lesson immediately, record the incident and make the learner sign.
I've explained to them, on numerous occasions, that they will be "building up evidence against themselves" and that their parents will get a chance to view this book on Parents Evening. I remind them that the rest of the class are witnesses and also that a signature is binding.
Once a week, I reinforce the procedure...
Of course, this has to be implemented from the beginning of the year.
It seems to be working well thus far...

    1. Michelle,
That sounds like an excellent system. I like the part about "building up evidence against themselves". They can't say they didn't if they sign to say they did.

  6. Gosh I don't even know where I'd start to be honest.
How does he get to the point where he can respond like that to an adult in the first place.

JL its so lovely to get a moment to come over....even if its 2AM, i just had to do something.
I gave up on the A to Z sadly because something just had to give......i hope next year I can finish.

    1. Oh and btw I do understand that its a comic strip but I have seen this happen in real life. In supermarkets and such...and we recently had a case where a student was recorded beating a teacher and apparently is is not a once off occurance....I just don't know how this happens. What kind of homes are these disrespectful kids coming from.

It was sad to see how that teacher had to cower and run because he is likely to be in trouble with the law if he lifted a hand in self-defence...they are told all the time...do not retaliate.

  7. Wow, Michelle, I love your system :)

Joy, I would tell the little guy he should be thankful I'm not acting out the role in real life ;).
