I do think fantasy authors search for names with meaning, but our readers for whatever reason look for the new, unusual, and even the complex in character names. I try to avoid names that are too off-the-wall, while respecting this expectation on the part of my readers.Karin Rita Gastreichhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13788750258292938903noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137802664622571509.post-75067345351917279832011-04-16T12:53:22.780-05:002011-04-16T12:53:22.780-05:00I generally just pick a name out of the hat, but I...I generally just pick a name out of the hat, but I do make sure that I don't have similar sounding names or ones that begin with the same letter.Juliet Boydhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04388850310197925066noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137802664622571509.post-20577323624470475982011-04-16T12:29:18.650-05:002011-04-16T12:29:18.650-05:00Great N post! Sometimes a name will come to me (first and last) and I'll write it down for future use because I love the way it sounds. And chances are good I can use it on a character in another story. I completely agree with you about avoiding names that start with the same letter unless they sound completely different. I've read stories where the author has done this before, and it's very confusing for the reader. I was constantly reading the "wrong" name, and getting confused.Sarah Allanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08400991060848486889noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4137802664622571509.post-80386630197045487372011-04-16T11:53:00.704-05:002011-04-16T11:53:00.704-05:00For my characters, I usually just pick a name at r...For my characters, I usually just pick a name at random and go with it. When I'm deciding on a name I examine all aspects of the character. What are their personality traits? Who are they? What matters to them? Where do they come from? What role do they play in my story? Are there any double meanings I can tie into their identity--even if just subtle?
