I slid an arm around Corinne, wincing when her weight rested against my ribs.

She pulled away to look me in the eyes. “Are you sure you’re okay, Roger?”

“I’m fine.” With the remote, I switched on the television. “Let’s watch something until the food gets here.”

Corinne kissed my jaw. “Conversation getting too intense for you?”

“Not likely. In case you don’t know, I’ve dealt with much tougher folks than you.”

“You have no idea how persistent I can be.”

“And you don’t know—”

The doorbell interrupted me and when I attempted to get up, Corinne held me back with one hand to my chest. “Stay. I’ll get it. That was quick though.”

“I need to get my wallet,” I said.

“Let’s worry about that later. My purse is closer.”

We shared a quiet battle of wills as we stared at each other. Corinne wasn’t about to back down so I raised both hands. “Fine, we’ll do it your way.”

She got up and kissed my forehead. “I like it when you recognize that you don’t have to control everything.”

The doorbell sounded again.

“Coming,” Corinne said, opening her purse. “No need to wear out the doorbell.”

Her feistiness brought another smile. The qualities I appreciated most about Corinne were her sassiness and independence. She was woman enough to do for herself and she made me laugh while getting the job done. I could easily see myself falling deeper under her spell. If only she’d let me behind the wall she’d built to protect her emotions.

Maybe the only way to get her to open up was to tell her the truth, like she’d asked me to do so many times. My secrecy was doing more damage than good, and if I wanted to keep Corinne, I didn’t have any other choice than to tell her what she wanted to know. The more I thought about being honest with her, the better I felt. We had the entire evening to talk, so I’d come clean after we ate.

All of a sudden, my scalp prickled, a bad sign. “Corinne?”

A scream and a thud had me on my feet in a second.
