IWSG Anthology Update

Wednesday, October 5, 2016

Today is another IWSG posting. The first Wednesday of the month is when we release our fears to the writing world and offer encouragement to other writers on the journey. Today, Captain Alex's trusty helpers are Beverly Stowe McClure, Megan Morgan, Viola Fury, Madeline Mora-Summonte, Angela Wooldridge, and Susan Gourley!

The question for today is How do you know when your story is ready?

Since I've been at this a while, for me, it's simple. My story is complete when on the edits, I am sure that I've tied up all plot points satisfactorily to answer all questions.

At the point where I start feeling sick and tired of my writing, that's usually a good time to quit. Also, when I start putting back commas I've taken out, that's the last step that tells me the book is finished.

How do you know when your story is finished?

For those who are competitive and like to give themselves a writing workout, don't forget the Anthology contest is open. Get details here. Please note that the word count has been revised, so your stories can be between 3,000 and 6,000 words. Have fun creating those stories!

  1. I do the same thing, add and replacing the same words over and over again. Drives me nuts. But it's certainly a good indication when to stop. Happy IWSG Day, Joy. Hope everything's okay in your neighbourhood. Thinking of you.

    1. Thank you, Joylene. We are good. No Matthew, just some more heavy rain today. Haiti though, took a beating. :(

I think we procrastinate when we're done to stop the inevitable sending out of our manuscript.

  2. Oh those pesky commas. They're more trouble than they are worth :)
    Great post, Joy. Thank you.

  3. LOL!! I almost answered when I'm sick to death of reading it anymore. And I seriously have a comma problem.

  4. I have not finished anything of yet. But I doubt seriously I could complete anything without a few errors. I worked at a bank where you could only make 5 mistakes a year. I thought of quitting the first day. However, they had a system where you caught almost all of your errors and a group that checked your work. When they caught your mistake, it only counted 1/5 of a mistake.
However, all my blog posts have an error it seems like.

  6. I start rearranging commas, too. Even in the books I'm editing.

  9. It is a hard question to answer. Every story has its own timeline.

  10. Remember the old commercial: no wine before it's time. (bad paraphrase) Anyway, our project is finished when it's finished. When all we're doing is tinkering.

  11. Second guessing commas, fretting over and change one word over and over again.
