A Crazy Writing Life, Taming Celeste & Contraband

Monday, January 27, 2014

I’ve been at writing long enough to know that I don’t get periods where I do nothing, except when I make them happen. But somehow, I keep thinking that closing one project means things will get nice and quiet.  That’s so not happening.

I’m proud and happy to have completed the biggest magazine job I’ve earned so far. It was challenging, but I got all the articles written on time. Also proofed the articles submitted by others. Getting the photos we needed proved a bit of a challenge, but believers know that ‘all good things work together for good…’  There are more jobs to come, but I think I’ll have a teeny-tiny break before those go into full swing.

Now, my fiction schedule for the first half of the year looks something like this:

  • Do another final edit of Taming Celeste, which is due out in March

  • Proof Taming Celeste on Kindle (I already did a print proof) See picture in this post. I only included it ‘cause people like to look at pictures. BTW – It’s the stand-alone sequel to Chasing Anya although it’s some years later and I had the cover done ages ago.

  • Format Taming Celeste before March steps in

  • Finish writing Absolution, which has been dogging me since 2012

  • Finish writing the third book in the Simms Siblings Series (started in 2010!)

  • Submit same to local writing competition. The medal looks nice on the book, but I don’t know if I’ll have the book finished by June to submit it.

  • Edit Dissolution, which I now have the rights for again

While all of the above is going on, I’ll be proofing some other stuff, writing more magazine articles, doing some additional studies, and trying to dovetail other activities so I can make a big move during the first quarter of this year.

Also, I have a request for anybody who loves to read and can help me out. I have nine (9) reviews on Contraband and need ten (10) to do anything promo-wise. Any good soul out there who wants some Caribbean style action-adventure-romance and would read the book in exchange for an Amazon review? Gotta warn you, there’s some violence involved, but I have a complex hero, who’s a good guy but does some not-so-good things. Any takers? Hit me up at jmwordsmith at gmail dot com and I’ll shoot you a Kindle copy or another format.

The life of a writer may be filled with craziness, but it’s our brand of craziness and we love it, right? What kind of stuff is going on in your writing life right now?

  8. Crazy life. Tell me about it! I'm prepping for a print release, |<-->| this close to handing off this book to CP's, working on my first serial story, building a house, home schooling, and training a presidency to work with a children's group of 80 kids. I don't think I'm going to meet my reading goals this month...and I've got one book sitting in the cue to critique... I need 3 of me!

  12. Hi, Crystal. You do have lots going on.

Thanks, Denise and I'm doing a course too, so yeah, it's kinda hectic right now.

Trying, Michelle. Right now I feel like I'm coasting as it pertains to writing, but I guess that's allowed after the humdinger of a job I just completed.

No worries, Susan. God is good. I've now had several offers, just through asking here. Amazing how far our reach goes into the web without us knowing.

    1. Thanks, Mary. Whatever works for you. The length isn't important. For me, just hearing what people think about the book and characters is the important thing. Will email. Thanks again.

  15. Looks like a lot work, but exciting! I'm ignorant about submitting your work to contests. What kind of contest are you looking to submit to that would get a medal on your book? Or if you tell the publisher you won an award, do you automatically get the medal? (I see one on "Don't Get Mad Get Even" in your sidebar.)

    1. Shannon, that competition is a local creative writing competition hosted by the Jamaica Cultural Development Commission. In the old days, before I was published, I submitted stories because I wanted impartial judges to decide whether my writing was up to scratch. It's a nice touch, I think, not that it sells books.
