Of Book Tours, Good Heath & Awesome Writers

Slipping this tidbit in here for the Healthy Writers Club over at Shallee McArthur's blog. On a Friday, each writer will put up a post about what they've done for that week to improve their health and tie it to their writing in some way.

Didn't get a lot done this week except for a half-hour exercise session on two days. Having read some scary statistics on the effects of sitting down for most of the day, I'm determined to do a bit better. I don't think about it often, but I spend a lot of time on my butt, which picks up when I get home and it's time to edit.

I probably won't get much done on the weekend, but we'll see.

I’ve said thanks a ton of times to the wonderful bloggers who hosted me on the book tour for Distraction. I’ll be in-boxing them again in the days to come, but still want to express another round of thanks for helping to make the tour happen.

The prizewinners have been contacted and mailing arrangements made and now, it’s back to work for me. Haven’t put anything together yet in terms of a post on my experiences, but that’s in the works.  Just in case you’re thinking of asking, yes, a blog tour is totally worth doing. Even if you don’t see an immediate upturn in sales, remember you’ve left your imprint all over the internet for eternity.  People will find you long after the festivities are over and you will have made more connections along the way.

Now, going in the opposite direction…

Writers (and lately, actors—namely, Idris Elba) continue to leave me in awe. Last night, I watched an episode of the BBCAM crime drama, Luther. It was about a heist and a money launderer, whose wife was kidnapped by persons in search of eighteen elusive diamonds. All the episodes I’ve seen so far are great, but this one had some amazing plot twists that swept me into the story and knocked me flat. The storyline, and acting by Elba and Steven Mackintosh—who plays DCI Ian Reed—was superb.

Vincent D'Onofio c/o Flixster - Share Movies
Most times, when I watch weeklies and movies, I don’t think about the writing that goes into the production. Last night though, I thought about the amazing talent of Neil Cross, novelist, true crime writer and obviously, a television script writer.

Not sure how I’m gonna remember to do this, since my attention span is tiny, but I have to find out when the re-runs are on, so I can watch this particular episode again. In Luther, Cross has created a driven, compelling and memorable character, and of course, Elba is soooo hot in this role! Mmm. Mmm. Mmm. Reminds me of Vincent D’Onofrio in Law & Order Criminal Intent. Found a video of Elba discussing Luther, plus a little bonus.

Now that I’m done rambling and wiped the slobber from my keyboard, I’ll follow the formula and ask which series or movie you’ve watched lately that made you think about the awesomeness of the actors/crew/writers.

  1. Idris Elba is swiftly becoming one of my favorite actors. Have you seen his new movie slated to come out next year? It is called "Pacific Rim" and is directed by Guillermo del Toro and features huge Japanese Kaiju and gargantuan robots. Here's a link to the comic con panel featuring talk about the movie:

    2. Yes. I was very impressed with him in "Prometheus" as the ship's captain.

    3. Of course, I haven't seen that one, but I looked at a few clips after the one you sent me to and Pacific Rim seems to have generated quite a buzz.

  2. Thanks for updating us about you blog tour.

Lilyhammer - set in Norway about an ex member of the mafia, was hilarious.

Steven Van Zandt - watch if you don't mind the language, etc.

  3. Peaches,
I like anything funny, be it books or movies.
In terms of movies with swearwords, if it's American, I always wonder how it's possible to use the F-bomb so many time. Now imagine, if Americans had as many swearwords as Jamaicans!

  4. I haven't seen Luther, but now I must! It sounds like a great show to watch, and I think my hubby will like it. I'm going to look it up.

    1. It is, Emily. The criminals do some shocking things, but the crime solving methods are interesting and the actors are really, really good. Haven't missed an episode since I came across the show by accident.

  5. Joy,
If I were British I would have said "Blimey!" ten times by now because I could hardly type your name correctly after drooling over my hands from watching Idris. Something told me to get paper towels before pressing play.

OMG his accent. I've watched him in shows where he doesn't allow his natural accent to slip through at all. Brilliant actor and so DREAMY!

Okay, I know I was supposed to say something about writing but my brain got fixated on Idris and other things sort of fell by the way side lol!!

    1. Angela, had to laugh over your comments. It's weird that when I'm watching the show I have to concentrate hard on understanding his accent. In this video clip, not so much, but yeah, I gotta agree. What a mighty fine man!

  6. I haven't seen Luther. I'll have to check it out. I love it when that sort of thing happens and the writing shines.

    1. This is sooooo good. The best thing on TV for me right now, beats Bones, Law & Order and all versions of CSI. It's that good.

  7. I don't watch much broadcast TV and we don't have cable, so I'm clueless about all of this. But good luck with your book!

  8. Ah, Idris Elba! *swoon swoon and double swoon*
I've had the biggest crush on him since watching him in the Wire!

  9. I'm kind of with Donna on this. We got rid of TV when my son's grades started slipping. Best thing I ever did. I used to miss the new shows and I took a lot of, "What? You don't have a TV?" from colleagues. So call me Out of the Loop!

    1. Definitely understand you giving up television in a case like that. Can't imagine living without it totally though.
