Lawrence Rowe, Runaway Bay & Run Dung

Lawrence Rowe
Lawrence Rowe represented the West Indies in cricket. He first played for Jamaica in the late 60’s and made history in his first test match. By 1975, he was thought to be the best batsman worldwide.  He was at the centre of a controversy during 1982 & 1983, when he led a ‘rebel tour’ to South Africa during Apartheid when they were not welcome in the sporting world.

Rowe and his team members were ostracized. In a controversial move, the Jamaica Cricket Association went back on its decision to honour Rowe by naming the pavilion at Sabina Park (premier cricketing grounds) after him. This, after he did an interview in which he said he saw nothing wrong with touring South Africa when he did.

Shoreline at Runaway Bay
Runaway Bay is located in the town of St. Ann, which is on Jamaica’s North Coast. It is ten minutes drive from Ocho Rios and has a wonderful white sand beach. The town got its name because runaway slaves used it as an escape route.  So, as a writer, I'm having flights of fancy. I imagine many slaves might have met their deaths running into the sea when cornered, rather than face the wrath of the 'massa'.

Today, Runaway Bay is a resort area where there is a mixture of hotels and villa accommodation.

Run Dung
Run Dung is a meal made from Mackerel that’s cooked in coconut milk and seasoning. It mightn’t sound very appetizing, but it’s liked by many Jamaicans. Run Dung is served with green bananas, yam and boiled dumplings.

    1. Me too. A beach would do wonders for me right now. And yes, lipstick doesn't work as well as the manufacturers say, even when they say it's long wearing. Out and about today. Will catch up with the bloggers I missed tonight into tomorrow.

  2. Although the pic doesn't do it justice, I think the meal sounds delicious.

  3. I'd try the Run Dung for sure. Are the boiled dumplings as hard as the ones in the VI? We call them bull tongue dumplings there. I LOVE them!

    1. Hey, Bish, I dunno, but the dumplings are tight. These are just flour and water and salt kneaded together. Could be the same thing. I didn't know anybody else did boiled dumplings.
