Bustamante, Beverly Hills & Breadfruit

 Sir Alexander  Bustamante
Bustamante,Alexander, Sir (Rt. Excellent): was born William Alexander Clarke. This firebrand championed the cause of the working class, and started a trade union.  He formed the Jamaica Labour Party in 1943 and wasn’t shy about speaking out against colonial rule. In 1962 he became the first Prime Minister of independent Jamaica. In 1970, Bustamante was declared a National Hero. He died in 1977. He was 93 at the time.

An aside here: Does anybody else see the resemblance between Bustamante and a way-back-when television character, or am I having a writer's usual flights of fancy?

Beverly Hills: is an upscale community, which forms part of the Long Mountain Range. It was developed fifty years ago and boasts unique architecture and impressive landscaping.  Like its Los Angeles namesake, Beverly Hills boasts the very best in residential properties in Jamaica. Breadfruit: was introduced to Jamaica by Captain Bligh via the HMS Providence in 1793. Bligh had stayed in Tahiti for six months and took seeds on the trip with him.

The breadfruit is part of the mulberry family and when green, the fruit is hard and its inside white. When ripe, it becomes soft and sweet. The inside can range from cream-coloured to yellow. Breadfruit can be baked, boiled, roasted, fried, etc. I like it best when it’s almost ripe, roasted and then fried. Delicious!

Thanks for dropping in. Hope you enjoyed this taste of Jamaica.

  7. Thanks for sharing more info about Jamaica! I visited there many years ago and simply loved it. Well, except for the time I got stuck in a downpour of rain in only my bathing suit. I got very cold very fast. But a warm shower solved that problem.

And, I gave you an award! Stop by my 4/1/12 post to pick it up!

  9. Hi JL .. love the theme about Jamaica - great fun idea .. one day I shall get there! Breadfruit I've never tried - something else to do .. but I love Bustamante's name and interesting his influence on politics in Jamaica. I can see a resemblance - I thought it might be Lionel Stander from Hart to Hart - it could be ... I had to check though ...

    Cheers Hilary

  21. Great post, JL. Lol! From a tropical country I do know what a breadfruit is. We make curry out of not that ripe ones but like you I like the ripe ones deep fried.

  23. Hi,
Bustamante does rather look like several character actors that I have seen in movies and on TV. The kind that played lawyers and men of great character. I've been around for a long time (79 in May) and have seen a lot of movies and TV shows. Jamaica has always sounded like a wonderful place to visit. (My maiden name was Campbell...perhaps we are kinfolk?)
    Thsnks for the post.

  25. Sir Bustamante might look a little bit like Buddy Epson, who played Jed Clampett in Beverly Hillbillies and Marcus Welby MD. :)

I'd love to try breadfruit if I could find it in the grocery around here.
