Total Tearjerkers - Sad Songs Blogfest

Friday, March 30, 2012

Diane at Spunk on a Stick is hosting the Sad Songs Blogfest today. Diane, you rock!

Being a fan of tearjerkers, I went TOTALLY overboard. This compilation will help me to create a particular mood like the list here. Putting this together brought back some good memories and even made me think about doing some kind of music-related blogfest of my own. Someday maybe.

When you’re done here, hop on over and visit the other people in the Sad SongsBlogfest. Hope these strike a chord with you!

A Working Man's Prayer by Arthur Prysock
As Soon as I Hang up the Phone by Conway Twitty & Loretta Lynn
Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel
Daniel by Elton John
El Paso by Marty Robbins (who I’m convinced had nine lives)
Goodnight Saigon by Billy Joel
Hurt by the Manhattans
I Went to Your Wedding by Patti Page
I Will Always Love You by Whitney Houston
If Only for one Night by Luther Vandross (Not strictly a sad song. Just makes me sad for
personal reasons)
In the Ghetto by Candy Staton
Last Time I Saw Him by Diana Ross
Loving Arms by Millie Jackson
Lucille by Kenny Rogers
My Eyes Adored You by Frankie Valli
Neither One of Us by Gladys Knight & the Pips

Sitting In Limbo by Jimmy Cliff
Sorry Doesn’t Always Make It Right by Gladys Knight & the Pips

Take a Message to Mary by the Everly Brothers
Tell Laura I Love Her by Ray Peterson
The Lost Penny by Brook Benton (Not a sad song, but somehow it makes me sad each time I
hear it)
The Sound of Silence by Simon & Garfunkel (I think of this one as abstract art that makes me wanna cry)
The Words Get in the Way by Gloria Estefan
They’re Hanging Me Tonight by Marty Robbins (That’s two lives already! See El Paso above)
Til I See You Again by Gladys Knight & the Pips
Waterfalls by TLC

There are so many of them on there that I love too for various reasons and also some that reminded me of others I could have put on my list. ABBA's 'The Winner Takes It All' for example. Great to see the Everly Brothers in there and also 'Take a Message To Mary'

  36. I like how you went "Old School" in so many instances.

Gosh, there are several Simon & Garfunkel songs I could have added to my list. You pegged a couple of them right here.

Speaking of "Nine Lives" have you ever heard the Marty Robbins follow-up to 'El Paso'? If not, it's called 'El Paso City', and it connects with 'El Paso' in that he sings it as if he's the reincarnated soul from the original song, flying in a jet plane over modern El Paso. It's really good!

And, incidentally, I happen to FIRMLY believe in "reincarnation". Heck, it's in The Bible, for crying-out-loud, if only people would grow "eyes to see" it!

Anyway, I'm sure you could find 'El Paso City' at YouTube. Check it out! What a unique and interesting sequel to the original hit.

    1. Hi, Stephen,
Haven't come across that follow-up. I definitely will be checking that out. I was fed on Marty Robbins, Sam Cooke, Skeeter Davis, Patti Page and Jim Reeves. It was a Jamaican tradition to dust off the oldies and play every one of them on Sunday morning. My love of old music developed from there.
