Snapshots of Kingston, Jamaica

Thursday, July 14, 2011

As of now I'll be showcasing snippets of Jamaican life for my Friday post. Most of my novels are set in Jamaica, so I thought it would be a good idea to share some of what I encounter each day. I'm sure you'll see scenes here that you're not likely to see anywhere else in the world. Guaranteed! Watch this space and have fun with me on the streets of Kingston or wherever else I might roam.

Why park on the street when you can deprive the pedestrians of the sidewalk?

Why should a perfectly good sidewalk go to waste, when we can set up a vending area?
Jamaica might be a third world country, but we have a gazillion car marts. See the laid back security-type guy? Bet you've never seen one of those before.
Clock in Half-Way-Tree - Popular landmark between down town Kingston and upper St. Andrew.  Delicate operation here, balancing between the truck on the left and the snoozer's head on the right.

Meet the vampire-in-training who lives at my house. He's asleep now, but really should be feeding to keep his strength up.
Photographer's perch where  I took most of the shots. The young vamp captured his own image with my phone.
Enjoy your weekend and meet me back here on Monday for some thoughts on writing and what-not.

  2. Hi,

Hee hee, they don't show those high-spots on the holiday brochures! But, parking on the pavement/side walk is a common sight in many places around the world including UK: white-van-man hated by other motorists and pedestrians like no other.

Francine, you can say that again. They don't put pics like these in the glossy brochures!

  4. Well now there's no point in me visiting Jamaica ever is there. I'll feel so at home it'll be like I never made it to the airport at all.
I think this is a brilliant idea you have going here.

  5. Wow, the sidewalks have a myriad of uses there, huh? I know some places in the U.S. like that. =D

  6. Wendy, love how you've augmented your picture! And here I was thinking Jamaica is unique. I keep finding out that our ancestors brought all sorts of stuff over with them from Africa.Wendy, love how you've augmented your picture! And here I was thinking Jamaica is unique. Donna, yep, we just kind of take over any space that looks like it can be put to use. Not an organized way to do things though. As you can imagine, the outfit that manages the city has a lot of work on its hands.

  7. Parking/vending on the sidewalk are things they do in the Virgin Islands and I suspect around the Caribbean. Kinda almost makes me homesick. :)

Yes, vampires are all the rage, it seems.

  13. Damyanti and Clarissa, I think Jamaica shares a lot with countries that have a high volume of people with not-sop-much education.
