Unfocused & Ugli Fruit

I've been pretty much unfocused for most of today. I've been working on a couple of projects. With my internet connection down half the time, I actually sat down and worked on a chapter of the novel I hope to be done with by the end of the year.  Yeah, me! Seriously, though, I need to put some work into my novel, otherwise I might not have anything more to be published!

This is kind of like taking a hard look at my WiP when my characters start wandering all over the place doing stuff I didn't originally work into the story. Side trips may work out well some of the time, but in most instances our stories gel better if we keep our characters on the straight and narrow. I've had some painful editing time trying to work out what to keep and what to slash because my characters went on unplanned adventures. How do you rein your characters in from side trips?

Ugli Fruit
The only U food I could think of is something called Ugli Fruit. It's another native to Jamiaca, a hybrid created from a grapefruit, orange and tangerine.

As you can see, it's not pretty to look at, however, it is sweeter than your average grapefruit. First found in the wild, the ugli fruit has gone commercial and it is bred and bottled for commercial consumption.

  4. Hey, Missy. Thanks for stopping in.

Jeanne, Didn't know these grew anywhere else, but what am I thinking?

Holly, you might want to try one.

  5. Today seems to be an unfocused day.
I've never heard of ugli fruit. It lives up to its name, at least on the outside. :)

  6. All of my fiction characters are from screenplays I'm writing. Strange as it may sound, I allow my characters to take me where they want to go., because I believe they know themselves better than I do. I may have to reign the story in, but the characters seem to flesh themselves out and I love watching them blossom. I've been afraid to eat an Ugli fruit, because I had no clue what was inside. Thank you for the explanation and for the photo. My latest A-Z Challenge: Under Pressure

  8. My characters often go on unplanned adventures and I'm often unfocused. I think it is so important to stay focused and decide what stays and what goes.

  9. I love the way that fruit looks!

Btw, I think I've been very unfocused as well...used your prompt the other day for a post and forgot to inform you...apologies.

Do stop by to take a look at S for Sacrilege...

  11. Ugli fruit looks and sounds delicious. I will definitely have to try some. I have a hard time keeping my characters from going off on tangents. I usually have to write it out, then get rid of it or my characters won't leave me alone.

  12. I hope you're keeping those side-adventures in a separate file. You never know when they'll develop into another new novel.

I've never had ugli fruit. It sounds tasty though.

  13. I love getting introduced to new foods here...ugly or not ;)

I've been straining to get my focus in gear for over a week. I think spring break (kids home) had something to do with it. Now that school is in session, I'm hoping to reconnect with my characters!

  14. Damyanti, thought-provoking story.

Melissa, I see you've got some characters who want to do their own thing.

Rosalind, if I get a great idea I do save it for when I can get to it.

Rula, hope you get some stuff done. My boy goes back to school next week, so I continue to be not-so-focused.

  15. Is it me, or does the Ugli Fruit look like a lemon? I love grapefruit; I practically eat them every morning. Though, I haven't seen any Ugli fruits around. Is it on the commercial circuit like Safeway or more like Whole Foods?
